NEW JERSEY LEAGUE FOR NURSING

“Promoting Fairness for New Jersey Nurses To Ensure
Nursing Availability for The Healthcare of Our Citizens”

RESOLUTION

Whereas, shorter lengths of stay, higher patient acuity, and more sophisticated technologies
and procedures are increasing the complexity of patient care, and

Whereas, the rapidly increasing and evolving complexity of care will place a greater demand on
nursing competencies, making the development of new skills and competencies a prerequisite
for nurses of the future, and

Whereas, in an effort to respond to the nursing shortage projections identifying the Monthly
Labor Review
of U.S. labor statistics, more than one million new and replacement nurses will
be needed by 2012, and

Whereas, the projected shortage is a catalyst for increasing stress and causes further dissatisfaction
resulting in nurses leaving the profession, thereby contributing to increased risk of avoidable
patient mortality, and

Whereas, there is no strategic plan in place for how the baccalaureate level needs of all the nurses
requiring the credential will be met, and

Whereas, the New Jersey Board of Nursing has put into place a requirement for continuing
education in a less formalized setting as a condition of re-licensure to address and enhance
skills and competencies of currently licensed and practicing nurses, and

Whereas, the National League for Nursing supports all entry levels of nursing education and
nursing practice and the New Jersey League for Nursing has consistently supported nurses
in their pursuit of formal education and continuing education, therefore, be it

Resolved that the New Jersey League for Nursing opposes any legislation that would potentially
remove nurses from practice by requiring a baccalaureate degree in nursing within a
mandated timeframe for continued practice.
