L.P.N. REFRESHER COURSE

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The nurse refresher course is a 12  week planned course, that meets 2  evenings a week from 6 PM to 10 PM, for individuals licensed (or whose license has lapsed with approval from the Board of Nursing) to practice nursing, who are preparing to re-enter nursing practice. It includes a review and update of core nursing concepts and practice principles which include: a review of current HIPPA regulations; infection control; pharmacology; and legal, ethical, and cultural issues. At the completion of the course, the participant will be prepared to enter an orientation program at an employing agency. Clinical experience will be concurrent with theory. Opportunities to practice procedures in the lab prior to clinical will be available.

Nursing Theory and Laboratory Objectives:

1. Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental skills.
2. Demonstrate physical assessment technique.
3. Demonstrate technique for administration of medications by all routes.
4. Demonstrate venipuncture technique for the purpose of drawing blood and starting IV’s and central line dressing changes technique.

Nursing Clinical Objectives:

1. Demonstrate proficiency, confidence, and accountability in the clinical setting.
2. Complete documentation according to institutional policy.
3. Plan and implement patient care through the application of the nursing process.
4. State pathophysiology and relate pertinent laboratory values to the diagnosis of assigned client.
5. Demonstrate appropriate use of current nursing technology in practice.
6. Administer medications safely.
