MARY JEAN KINSELLA, MSN, RN, BC

Core Measure Coordinator, Nursing Administration
Bayshore Community Hospital
Holmdel, New Jersey

Mary Jean Kinsella has the responsibility to assure core measure compliance of nursing and physician staff through quality improvement activities and outcome indicators based on problem prone criteria. As part of this responsibility she reports nursing quality activities as they relate core measures, provides education to nursing staff regarding evidence based practice relating to core measures, works collaboratively with Nursing and Medical Performance Improvement committees, maintains records documenting compliance with standards, submits reports, and monitors current literature and research on HQSI regulation and implements practice changes as needed. She is certified by the ANCC in Medical/Surgical Nursing and Gerentological Nursing.

Ms. Kinsella demonstrates excellence in her clinical practice and teaching roles by setting high standards for herself and the entire healthcare team. She believes that philosophy plays an integral role in achieving quality outcomes and that a holistic approach is essential to delivering nursing care, continuously encouraging staff to improve their knowledge and skills so they too can take a holistic approach to care delivery. Mary Jean never settles for just compliance but strives to achieve excellence in patient outcomes. She meets regularly with nursing and medical staff to find creative solutions to reach targets for core measures and other quality initiatives. Ms. Kinsella is always willing to take an active role in implementing new ideas, best practices or pilot programs and plays a vital role in performance improvement activities. She is a change agent in moving this facility to achieve quality outcomes and never ceasing to be a patient advocate, believing that we need to “allow patients to be human, to question, to laugh, cry, and die with dignity.”

Ms. Kinsella had implemented her agency’s affiliation with the New Jersey Hospital Association Pressure Ulcer Collaborative. She and the wound care team collected and submitted data on prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers for a year and a half noting positive results as an outcome of this collaborative project. Ms. Kinsella continues to serve as a member of the wound care team as well as a member of the Executive Council and participates in the Journal Club. Mary Jean demonstrates excellence in nursing outside of her defined functions. She has presented an educational program to pharmaceutical company managers to explain the pneumonia core measures, how they relate to those working in the pharmaceutical field, and how core measure compliance relates to positive patient outcomes.

Ms. Kinsella continually provides formal and informal educational sessions for nursing and physician staff to provide the knowledge base essential to support the evidence-based practices integral to the core measure compliance and assists them to understand that this compliance effects not only patient outcomes but reimbursement as well. She attends surgical and medical staff meetings as well as Performance Improvement meetings to review current scores and identify improvement methods if needed. She conducts biweekly Healthcare Quality Strategies Institute (HQSI) meetings not only to report data but to use expertise of team members to trouble shoot and problem solve. Ms. Kinsella works with all to improve compliance and sustain the gain.
